On Saturday, February 12, hundreds of masked residents filled the Paper Tiger for a rally by US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in support of two Texas congressional candidates, Jessica Cisneros and Greg Cassar. . Turned out to vote ahead of the presidential election on March 1.

Cisneros, an immigration attorney in Laredo, Democratic U.S. Rep. He is running against Henry Cuellar, who has served as a U.S. representative since 2005 for Texas' 28th congressional district. The district covers a portion of South Texas, beginning east of San Antonio and ending at the US-Mexico border.

Meanwhile, Cassar, a former Austin City Council member, is one of four Democrats running in Texas' 35th District, which stretches from San Antonio to Austin along Interstate 35. Texas' 35th U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, who is running for re-election in a newly formed district around Austin, has a long way to go.

During the rally, Ocasio-Cortez said she believes Texas will soon turn blue. He said it's only a matter of time before the state turns blue, and threw his support behind Cisneros and Kaiser — calling them progressive leaders who are here to fight for Texas families.

"That's what's exciting about Jessica's race and Greg's race is that if we turn Texas around, we turn the country around," Ocasio-Cortez said. "...Texas going blue is inevitable. The only question is when. We're going to fight for a living, we're going to make sure we get the hell out of this state...certainly not or even all workers, especially undocumented workers." Both are working to fight for Medicare for All, union jobs, the Green New Deal, ending student debt, comprehensive immigration, and reproductive justice.
Cisneros said citizens deserve to fight for their rights. He points out that his upbringing and the sacrifices his parents made during that time made him an immigration lawyer.

"I knew I wanted to help families like my parents get the shot as well," Cisneros said. "Thank you to the pro bono attorneys who helped my parents navigate this abomination of the immigration system.
"I see the biggest opposition is not the other candidates or their supporters, the biggest opposition is talking to people who have lost faith in what this democracy will give them," Kasar said.

When a star political leader like Ocasio-Cortez came to San Antonio, hundreds of millennials flocked to hear her speak. Kat Lerma, 27, told MYSA that having these Texas candidates back Ocasio-Cortez shows her that they must have good character and moral values. He said he has a lot of respect for Ocasio-Cortez and her passion for politics.

"I see their passion for this issue and I think it's really new, not just Congress or senators or anybody in office, but it's like a new movement," Lerma said. "It will be an incentive for good things and for the youth. We will change things."
The event also meant a national spotlight for San Antonio, and CBS News attended the rally, which featured Mariah's music and bilingual speeches.
The event also drew protests from Paper Tiger, with about 30 to 50 people chanting "Take off the mask" and "F**k Biden" to others.
Wherever you live, this event has resulted in the announcement of early elections starting March 1.

Both Cisneros and Casar are running in historically blue districts, meaning they could both enter the AOC in Congress if they win on March 1.
"The Texas [primary] election is 10 days away, and the stakes couldn't be higher," Cisneros told the Express-News. "We are fighting together for representatives who will protect the interests of South Texans by investing in us through Medicare for all, good-paying union jobs and our property freedoms."
