"Maybe student loan forgiveness doesn't affect you. That doesn't make it bad. I'm sure there are other things paying student loan taxes that you benefit from. We can do good things and reject the scarcity mentality that it says that doing something good for someone else comes at a cost to ourselves," Ocasio-Cortez said.
The MP added that not all programs affect everyone and that "people with apartments are paying home owner benefits for the first time. Young people are paying into Medicare for our seniors. People taking public transport are paying for infrastructure of the car".

His response comes after President Joe Biden announced a relief program Wednesday to forgive outstanding federal student loans for some borrowers. Biden said those with student loans who make less than $125,000 a year can receive $20,000 in student loan forgiveness if they receive Pell grants, while those who make less than $125,000 a year are not. Pell Grants will be eligible for $10,000 in loan forgiveness.

While Biden's plan aims to help millions of Americans struggling to pay off their student loans, some Republicans criticized the president for his forgiveness plan.
On Friday, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz criticized Biden's plan, saying the "softer baristas" who benefited from loan forgiveness could help Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections.
"There is a real risk," Cruz said. "If you could get off the bong for a minute and get down to the polls," the Republican senator continued. "Or just turn in your ballot that the Democrats helpfully sent you — it could increase voter turnout, especially among young people."

Meanwhile, other Republicans criticized Biden's plan, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Georgia, who called the program "completely unfair" in a Wednesday interview with Newsmax. However, the White House responded to this video, saying that the congresswoman benefits from Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) loans, which were signed into law by former President Donald Trump as part of the CARES Act in March 2020.
